German writer, although she is virtually unknown in non-German speaking countries, still famous in Germany. She became a member of the German Communist Party in 1928 and her novel 'Die Gefährten', a warning of the dangers of Fascism, caused her to be arrested by the Gestapo. She fled to Mexico, where she founded the resistance organisation 'Free Germany'. She wrote the novel 'The Seventh Cross', which tells the story of the escape of seven prisoners from a concentration camp, it was made into a film by MGM in 1944, starring Spencer Tracy. She returned to Germany in 1947 and in 1950 she made her home in East Berlin.
