German writer and academic. He grew up in Bavaria and studied German language and literature in Freiburg, Switzerland, and Manchester. From 1970 he taught at the University of East Anglia in Norwich, England, becoming professor of European literature in 1987. Sebald's novels mix fact and recollection of his travels around Europe. He also produced three books of poetry. He died in a car crash in 2001.
