American writer of fiction and non-fiction who through her work created a chronicle of Appalachia. She studied at Northwestern University, graduating in 1940. Dykeman wrote eighteen books, including three novels, as well as a regular newspaper column, which was published as a collected edition in 1984. Her first book, ‘The French Broad’, was published in 1955 and influenced Appalachian writers to seek inspiration from their heritage. In 1981 she was made the official state historian of Tennessee, a position she maintained until 2002. In 1985 she was granted the North Carolina Award for literature and inducted into the North Carolina Hall of Fame. The Appalachian Writer Guild presents an annual award in her name; the Wilma Dykeman Award is presented for the best essay on Appalachian life, literature or culture.
